  • July 11, 2014 - Reflections

    By Jean S. Horner
The other day while walking down a corridor in a public building, I saw what appeared to be someone walking toward me. On coming closer, I found it was my own reflection in a huge mirror. For a moment it frightened me. Somehow a full-length reflection of one’s self is a startling thing. ...

August 3, 2011 - You Fit In!

By Doug Clay

Remember as a kid how good it felt to be chosen? Whether it was recess kickball or after school football, it was a great feeling to be picked for the team!

One of the saddest realities of life is watching people live their lives, even as adults, trying to gain the approval of their parents. Often this comes as a result of growing up with “unpleasable parents” — you know, the kind of parents who, no matter what you did, never acknowledged it as good enough.

I remember a discouraged young pastor who shared with me his sense of not living up to his parents’ expectations and trying hard to win their approval. To top it off, he had married and did not feel accepted by his in-laws either. I felt helpless in my counsel and encouragement to him. As I prayed for him over the next couple days, I felt prompted to remind him that to God, he fits in. I shared with him the following Scriptures and suggested that he read them out loud every morning.

“Christ accepted you” (Romans 15:7, NIV).

“You have been chosen by God himself” (1 Peter 2:9, The Living Bible).

“Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me” (Psalm 27:10, NIV).

“If we are children, then we are heirs — heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ” (Romans 8:17).

“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).

If you find yourself struggling with this issue of acceptance and/or frustrated by not feeling your parents’ approval, then recite these verses and hear God say to you that “You fit in!”
