  • July 11, 2014 - Reflections

    By Jean S. Horner
The other day while walking down a corridor in a public building, I saw what appeared to be someone walking toward me. On coming closer, I found it was my own reflection in a huge mirror. For a moment it frightened me. Somehow a full-length reflection of one’s self is a startling thing. ...

August 18, 2011 - Claudine’s Joy

By Kristen Feola

“Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy” (Psalm 34:5, NLT).

One morning while walking in my neighborhood, I approached an elderly woman at an intersection. She was waiting for the light to change. I smiled and said, “Good morning.” She did the same. When it was safe to cross the street, I went on ahead of her down the sidewalk.

After about a minute or so, I heard her shout, “Where do you volunteer?” She had read the back of my t-shirt, which shows the definition of the word: “one who freely enlists for service without request, obligation, or payment.” I turned around, walked toward her, and answered, “Oh, I just work in the children’s area at my church, James River Assembly.” Her eyes lit up, and she said she’d always wanted to visit. I encouraged her to do so and even offered to give her a ride.

What struck me about Claudine right away was her joy. She obviously loves the Lord, and her whole countenance radiates His love. When we parted, I said, “Have a great day, Claudine,” to which she replied, “Well, you just made it, Kristen!”

I made her day? How? Somehow the fact that I work with kids encouraged her. However, I was the one who walked away from our time together most blessed. Even though I spent only a few minutes with Claudine, she made such an impact on me that I had to write about her.

Claudine’s joy reminded me that I need to slow down, not take life so seriously, and enjoy each moment God gives me. I want to be like Claudine. Don’t you? The key is to let the Lord be the source of your joy. He will bring a smile to your face each day as you look to Him.
