Daily Boost

  • July 11, 2014 - Reflections

    By Jean S. Horner
The other day while walking down a corridor in a public building, I saw what appeared to be someone walking toward me. On coming closer, I found it was my own reflection in a huge mirror. For a moment it frightened me. Somehow a full-length reflection of one’s self is a startling thing. ...

A Day at a Time: In-Box Inquiry

“How are you?”

Many of us ask the question in a flash, often as a substitute for hello. We don’t expect an in-depth answer. If queried, we’re just as quick to reply with a “Fine, thanks” and never mention the challenges we might be facing.

Surface greetings don’t allow for the time needed to understand, to commiserate, or even to help one another celebrate if our day is going well. We’re on the move, and the rush of routine tends to insulate us.

To help break through that insulation, in 2006 the Pentecostal Evangel began offering Daily Boost, a free email devotional. Daily Boost is a great resource for Bible study and Bible-based encouragement and gives an opportunity to pause for a few minutes for a spiritual self-check.

Volunteer Daily Boost authors connect their life experiences with a deep commitment to the Bible’s truths. They share their insights freely and invite readers to take stock of their own situations through a biblical lens. (Thomas Lindberg’s lead article this week is a great reminder of the power of that lens.)

The Daily Boost online community can’t replace a compassionate family member or friend. But it’s tailor-made for people in need of a little break, of a tiny shot of faith, wisdom and comfort. Monday through Friday, another friendly file appears in more than 3,100 inboxes and, in a sense, asks subscribers how they’re doing.

A day’s devotion offers hope and encouragement, even when the theme is somber. And there are plenty of light-hearted articles that celebrate family life, special days of the year, nature’s beauty, and church and community. Above all, every Daily Boost points in some way to the joy of living that day in a saving relationship with Jesus Christ.

If you feel your spirit lift just a bit after reading the selections and the author’s interview in this issue, consider signing up to receive Daily Boost.
